Choose the lamp for the desk you actually use.
The most attractive lamp in a product photo may put light in the wrong place on your desk. Start with the task, the available space and where you sit.
Measure before comparing models
Write down the width and depth of your work area, the height of your monitor and the distance from the proposed lamp position to the page or keyboard. For a clamp lamp, measure the desktop thickness and check whether a lip, frame or cable tray blocks the clamp. A lamp that technically fits the desk edge may still be unable to reach your work.
If you write by hand, test a position on the opposite side from your writing hand to reduce the shadow it casts. If you use a screen, consider whether the light source or a bright reflection will be visible from your normal seated position.
Compare the designs by their compromises

Read brightness claims in context
A dimmer is useful when you move between reading, screen work and evening use. A quoted light-output figure does not tell you how evenly the lamp lights your desk. Check whether the seller describes the illuminated area and measurement distance. Avoid treating photos taken in different rooms as a controlled brightness comparison.
Colour-temperature settings describe the appearance of the light, not proof that a lamp is better for your health. Choose a setting you find comfortable, and be cautious about unsupported eye-health or productivity claims.
Controls matter every day
Find out where the switch is and whether you can reach it without stretching. If you use a wall switch or smart plug, ask whether the lamp comes back on after power is restored. For an app-controlled model, check what still works without an account, internet connection or phone. Physical controls are often more convenient for a simple on-off task.
Check what happens when something fails
A replaceable bulb can be easier to service, but you must match the permitted bulb type and wattage. For an integrated LED model, check the warranty and whether the power adapter is replaceable. Confirm the supplied plug, voltage compatibility, cable length and whether an adapter costs extra.
A five-minute decision
- Rule out lamps that do not fit or reach.
- Check glare from your normal seated position.
- Choose controls you will actually use.
- Compare the complete delivered price and replacement requirements.
- Read the return conditions, including whether you can try it at home.
When two options both meet these needs, the more expensive one needs a specific benefit you value. A longer feature list is not a reason on its own.
